About the Book

Poker has taken America by storm. But it’s not just any form of poker that has people across the country so excited it’s no-limit hold ’em the main event game. And now, thanks to televised tournaments, tens of thousands of new players are eager to claim their share of poker glory.
In the first volume of this series, Harrington on Hold ’em: Volume I: Strategic Play, Dan Harrington explained how to play in the early phases of tournaments, when most players at the table had plenty of chips, and the blinds and antes were small. This book, Harrington on Hold ’em: Volume II: The Endgame shows you how to play in the later phases of a tournament, when the field has been cut down, the blinds and antes are growing, and the big prize money is within sight. Harrington shows you how to make moves, handle tricky inflection point plays, and maneuver when the tournament is down to its last few players and the end is in sight. Hes also included a whole chapter on heads-up play, whose strategies up to now have been a closely-guarded secret of the game’s top masters.

Dan Harrington won the gold bracelet and the World Champion title at the $10,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold ’em Championship at the 1995 World Series of Poker. And he was the only player to make it to the final table in 2003 (field of 839) and 2004 (field of 2,576) considered by cognoscenti to be the greatest accomplishment in WSOP history. In Harrington on Hold ’em, Harrington and two-time World Backgammon Champion Bill Robertie have written the definitive book on no-limit hold ’em for players who want to win and win big.

Before reading this book I rarely stood a chance in tournaments of any size. It seemed impossible to win or even make your way to the final table. After learning the basics of Harrington's M system, which basically describes how to adjust your opening hand range based on your stack vs the blinds and antes, I found myself going deep in tournaments very often vs only once in a while. Poker is a game of adopting to each situation, so there is no "perfect system" out there that will ensure success, but you could follow Harrington's M system pretty blindly and go deep time after time. More experienced players will know what you are doing and try to outplay you, but 90% of tournament fields are usually soft, so its easy to figure out who is who and adopt accordingly. Get this book and a few books on shorthanded and heads-up play to become the ultimate poker tournament shark. Because this book will take you to a lot of final tables!

Unless you have thoroughly mastered what Harrington recommends in volume I and now consider yourself to be an advance player, you will do yourself a disservice by trying to implement the recommendations of volume II. Volume II largely deals with how to play hands that would be considered to be unplayable in Volume I. It's good stuff, but need to be taken within the context of your current abilities.

On this book [Strategic Play], Harrington provides the basics of proper play, his thoughts on strategy and tactics, lots of problems/scenarios, and builds a foundation for the second book [End Play]. His approach works. About a year a year ago I was invited to join a group that plays no-limit Texas Hold'em on a frequent basis. As the other players were far more experienced at poker than I [a few play in casinos or on-line], and because I didn't know "I didn't know what I was doing", I usually finished last or near to last. Since reading this book, I have not become a champion or won thousands of dollars any place (I only play in this group), but I have finished second a couple of times and recently came in first. But, even more importantly to me, the other players have commented on my improved play. That means they have begun to respect my play. Once they respect your play, you have more options, and you WILL win more pots. And that's what this book is really about---how to win more pots in the long run.
